Oak Hook-tip
Watsonalla binaria

(Hufnagel, 1767) 1646 / 65.002

A common resident throughout the region.
A species of oak woodland but also in parks and gardens where oaks occur.
Comes readily to light and overwinters as a pupa.
Recently another almost identical looking species has been discovered, so moths will now need to be retained.
Any Oak Hook-tip types should be photographed and kept for checking, to separate from Spiny Hook-tip.
As a guide: Moths with an oblique dark mark at the wing tip & adjacent white flash are likely Spiny Hook-tip. Those with solid dark shading extending from the wing tip by some distance with a shallow angle in the tip are probably Oak Hook-tip. Moths with an obvious black quotation mark as the upper central spot (closest to the costa) are likely Spiny Hook-tip.

Verification Grade Comment: Dissection needed to separate from Spiny Hook-tip
