Archiearis notha

(Hübner, 1803) 1662 / 70.204
=Boudinotiana notha

An uncommon and local resident in the south. Recently recorded in Staffordshire at Bushbury.

A species of open woodland containing Aspen.

Overwinters as a pupa. Adults fly above Aspen and Birch in the sunshine.

Note This species is very similar to Orange Underwing but lack of Aspen should help to eliminate that species. Males have pectinate (feathered) antennae. The underside of the hind wing should be examined. This species has an unbroken dark band around the margin, not or only slightly indented. On Orange Underwing this band is broken or strongly indented.

Hill, L., Jenner, P. & Plant, C.W. 2011. A confusion of Orange Underwings Archiearis parthenias (L.) and A. notha (Hb.) (Lep.: Geometridae). Entomologists' Record and Journal of Variation 123:2, 93-95.

Retained Specimen / Photograph will be Required.

Recorded in 24 (17%) of 140 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1869.
Last Recorded in 2022.
