A species of marshes, fens, canal and riverbanks where the foodplants grow.
Overwinters as a small larva while adults are attracted to light.
Note could be confused with Smoky Wainscot but the thin, pale-edged dark line on the collar (view from the front) should distinguish it. The underside if the hindwing has a central black dot which Common Wainscot doesn't have.
