Has declined nationally since 1960s and now found mainly in the south and east of UK. Probably extinct in the region. Last recorded in Staffordshire in 1983. One record for Herefordshire dated 1887. Last recorded in Worcestershire in 1978

Inhabits river banks, fens, marshes, parkland.

Lives under the bark of a variety of trees where it overwinters three of four times as a larva.
