An uncommon and local resident in the south. Recently recorded in Staffordshire at Bushbury.
A species of open woodland containing Aspen.
Overwinters as a pupa. Adults fly above Aspens in the sunshine.
Note This species is very similar to Orange Underwing but lack of Aspen should help to eliminate that species. The underside of the hind wing should be examined. This species has an unbroken dark band around the margin, not or only slightly indented. On Orange Underwing this band is broken or strongly indented.
