July Belle
Scotopteryx luridata

(Fabricius, 1775) 1734 / 70.041

A fairly common but local resident.

Found in a range of open habitats including grassland, heathland and moorland.

Flies at dusk but is easily disturbed from its resting place during the day.

Note Very similar to Lead Belle. The small black dot is round and usually nearer the 2nd; in Lead Belle it is tear-shaped and usually mid-way between or nearer to the 3rd line. Lead Belle also flies a little earlier though it overlaps. These characters are variable so genitalia examination is preferred.
