A very common resident.

Found in most habitats from lowland to moorland.

Overwinters as an egg. Males come readily to light and often seen in numbers at dusk.

Generally much darker than Northern Winter and hindwings do not protrude beyond the forewings when at rest.

First Recorded in 1866.
Last Recorded in 2022.
