An uncommon and local resident.

Found in upland habitats, including moorland. Scarce in lowland areas.

Overwinters as a pupa. Adults can fly commonly on warm afternoons and later come to light.

Note Satyr has chequered veins but so too does Freyer's but that has a dark band at base of abdomen, so too does Golden-rod but that has a larger discal spot.
