August Thorn
Ennomos quercinaria

(Hufnagel, 1767) 1912 / 70.233

An uncommon resident, more often in the south.

A species of woodland, parkland, gardens.

Overwinters as an egg, adults come to light.

Note Cannot use flight time to separate from September Thorn as both can occur in July! The outer cross-line is usually kinked where it meets the leading edge of the wing - not so in September Thorn. Inner cross-line of August has a longer, and more pronounced angle where it meets the wing edge. Also August holds its wings at a lower angle

Recorded in 90 (64%) of 140 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1869.
Last Recorded in 2022.
