Found in hedgerows, scrub, woodland edges and gardens.
Overwinters as a small larva. Adults can be found at rest during the day and later come readily to light.
Note Brown-tail is slightly large with less rounded wings and smaller or no spots near the trailing corner of the forewing. The tail is golden yellow whereas in Brown-tail it is a deep chocolate brown.
