Overwinters as a small larva and the adults common readily to light.
Note Scarce Footman is similar but it folds its wings around its body in a tube-like fashion. Dingy Footman is much broader with a narrower yellow leading edge which is also quite curved. The yellow leading edge of Common narrows towards the wing tip whereas on Scarce it doesn't.
