Found in a wide ranger of open habitats including gardens and open woodland.
Overwinters as a small larva and adults come readily to light.
Note often mistaken for the rarer White-point. In Clay the white mark on the kidney mark is small to almost absent and tear-shaped or ellipitical. On White-point it is much more obvious and almost round.
