A common resident across the region.

Most frequent in woodland but also found in scrub, parks, gardens.

Overwinters as an egg and adults come readily to light.

The orange suffusion on the underwing of Copper species stops at the black cross-line on the hindwing. In Svensson's it diffuses beyond. Another pointer is that Copper tends to be brighter and more contrasty with bolder chequering on the abdomen. Svensson's, before it was separated from Copper, used to be called the Drab Copper Underwing.
