Found only on Cannock Chase in Staffordshire where it was once thought to be extinct. The introduction of a pheromone lure has since shown it to be widespread there.
In Herefordshire there are 2 records, likely to be the same and refer to the Grwyne Fawr, which is in Monmouth and also Powys, but they get referred to twice as Herefordshire, once in the Woolhope Club Annual report from 1895 and then again in the Vice County History dated 1893. Same recorder. So some doubt occurs as to their true location.
Larvae found in the living tissue of mature birches.
