A common resident in the south and is spreading rapidly northwards, reaching Staffordshire in 2007, with over 170 subsequent records by 2022.

Prefers fens, marshes, riverbanks but also gardens and woodland.

Overwinters as a larva. Adults fly during the day but also come to light later.
