Fairly common resident amongst blackthorn in old uncut hedgerows and scrub.

Prunus spinosa, Crataegus spp. with larva feeding in buds and then spun leaves, from April to July. Can be disturbed from blackthorn thickets and other dense cover in autumn and winter, and comes to light, especially in the spring.

Extremely variable with a great many recognised forms, however, normally easily identified by the distinctive vertical scale tufts on the forewings, although by late spring these may become worn down to little more than bumps.
