Rare resident but possibly under-recorded as vacated mines cannot be reliably distinguished from those of S. alnetella.

Larva feeding on Alders Alnus glutinosa and A. cordata in two generation in July and again in September to October. Forms a gallery with frass usually dispersed but sometimes linear.

Larva typically a darker yellow than that of S. alnetella, mining venter upwards and with a darker ventral prothoracic plate (lacking in S. alnetella, which mines dorsum upwards). However, caution is advised and rearing through to adult is recommended for certain identification.
