Uncommon resident, although mines can sometimes be common locally.
Betula spp., Corylus avellana, Tilia cordata,
occasionally Malus spp., and then on leaf litter.
Flies in April/May with larva mining in June, making a small circular blotch mine, usually many in a single leaf. The larva then excises most of its mine to form a small bivalved case, which falls to the ground. Using this case as a habitation, it feeds on leaf litter until the following spring, when it pupates in the case.
