A very common and widespread grassland species. Readily disturbed during the day and later comes freely to light.

The larvae feed on various grasses in late summer and autumn before overwintering in a cocoon at ground level followed by pupation in the spring.

Note distinguished by the elbowed or "C"-shaped cross-lines. The equally common Agriphila straminella is much smaller and lacks the cross-lines.
