A common species, one of the first of the group to appear. Rests by day on rocks, tree trunks etc.

Note It is similar to a number of other species. S. basitstrigalis is larger with a long and broad forewing with a blunt apex and is blacker with more strongly chequered cilia. S. ancipitella has a relatively short forewing with plain greyish-white base and an irregular greyish-white cloud between the outer cross-line and the wing edge. Dissection is recommended if at all uncertain.
