A widespread and common species of woodland, scrub, moorland and grassland. Rests by day on walls and tree trunks and later comes readily to light.

Note similar to E. lacustrata but Eudonia mercurella has a slightly narrower and more pointed forewing. The pale sub-terrminal line of mercurella is usually entire. E. lacustrata sometimes has a hint of yellowish-brown and is often quite whitish. E. mercurella rarely, if ever shows a brownish tinge.
