A scarce and local species. It is found on the limestone of Llanymynech, on the Shropshire/Montgomeryshire border, and Dovedale and the Manifold Valley in Staffordshire. Also known from Broad Down on the Malvern Hills, but not seen there for some years. The adults fly in the sunshine but also come to light.

Note similar to Pyrausta nigrata but it has a broader forewing with the white cross-line being nearly straight rather than curved and lacks the white spot of nigrata
