Dyseriocrania subpurpurella

(Haworth, 1828)6 / 2.001
=Eriocrania subpurpurella

Very common resident.

Flies in sunshine around Oak Quercus spp. trees and can be swept from the foliage. Comes to light.

Mines are very common in Oak leaves from end of May to early July. Frass in distinctive long strands which separate mines of this species from superficially similar mines made by the weevil Orchestes pilosus. After heavy rain the mines sometimes fill with rainwater, drowning the larva within.

Verification Grade Comment: Potential confusion with weevil mines.

Recorded in 108 (77%) of 140 10k Squares.
