Eriocraniidae

8 species. Wingspan 9-14mm. Attractive small day flying moths with metallic gold, purple and blue scaled wings. They emerge early in the spring, fly in sunshine and can be disturbed from their foodplants and occasionally come to light. 6 species feed in Birch Betula spp., 1 in Oak Quercus spp. or sometimes Sweet Chestnut Castanea sativa, 1 in Hazel Corylus avellana or Hornbeam Carpinus betulus. Their larvae are leaf miners making blotch mines in leaves which can be recognised by the characteristic "spaghetti" like long intertwined threads of frass in the mines. They leave the mines to pupate in a cocoon in the soil.
