A large family of mostly small to medium sized moths which typically have a pattern of small dark discal and plical spots, often with a pale or white distal fascia, sometimes reduced to costal and tornal spots. The hindwing of most species characteristically has the apex produced into a pointed extension.
Life histories are very varied with larvae mining leaves or feeding in shoots, roots, stems and seed heads and some living and feeding in or between spun leaves or in silken tubes in moss. Imagines mostly nocturnal or flying at dusk and coming to light but a few are diurnal.
